Is It Okay To Make Money From a Spiritual Business. And Is It Okay Not To?

Is It Okay To Make Money From a Spiritual Business. And Is It Okay Not To?

By IICT Member Ginny West, Spirit in Business

The question of making money from a spiritual business is one that often plagues my clients.

Times have changed

Once upon a time teachers, healers, leaders were paid by their benefactors or institution. You could happily carry out your purpose for free without having to worry about how to pay the bills or where your next meal was coming from. This is very much still the case amongst organised spiritual groups from Christianity to Buddhism to Yoga. Today with the need for insurance, a website, marketing and your survival basics like rent, bills and clothing (never mind a little treat every now and again), for us sole practitioners it becomes a little more complicated. Add to that a few psychological complexes around money and self worth and you may find yourself a little angst ridden about what you should do. Often these questions operate at a subconscious level sabotaging your success.

What does your soul want to do?

So rather than start a mental discussion about the rights and wrongs of whether or what you should charge, ask yourself; what does your soul want to do? What feels right to you? What can you live with? Take it back to your dharma or purpose. Is it part of your dharma to experience wealth this lifetime? You may feel worried that your clients may miss out because they cannot afford your services, but what if part of their lesson was to believe in their own wealth, and by giving it away for free you were confirming their poverty consciousness? What if you had to work a job you hated that impacted your health and happiness, because you refused to make a living from the place where you could do the most good for the world? Do you really think this is what spirit would want for you? I truly believe spirit is unattached to the choices you make as long as they are true for you. Money is neither here nor there in the universal picture. It is just colored paper you swap for a service, but when you load it up with your ‘stuff’ it becomes something else entirely.

Is it your path to give away what you have? Do you have a deep and genuine calling to offer services on a volunteer basis? Perhaps you want to do this with groups like the homeless, depression or anxiety foundations, young mums, in aged care, in schools or community? Would you like to run a not for profit organisation? Or is it even a combination you like, or something totally different? Would you like to provide expensive corporate events so you can give away services to those in need? Would you like to crowd fund your work? The possibilities are endless, but the most important thing is to make sure your choices are wholly aligned with your dharma. Let that always be the marker of your truth and direction.

Leave judgement out of it.

It’s not up to us to judge what someone else is or isn’t charging for their services. In the same way it is your sole responsibility to decide your own dharma, so it is the choice of others to decide their own. Similarly when clients come to you with money stuff don’t make presumptions they are there to make a million (not that there’s anything wrong with that!). When I see wellbeing practitioners we talk about where they want to be and what they want to achieve from the heart and soul. If they want to travel and teach all over the world we set up a path for that. But if they want to have a beautiful grass roots practice at home, we set a path for that. Authentic success is nothing to do with money in and of itself. It is about creating an outward expression (your life) of your inner spirit by working out what finances, structure, processes and direction you need to do that.

Get some help

I have worked through a lot of my money stuff with Kinesiology, but choose whatever modem is most effective for you, but know as well that if money has been a big issue for you it may be something you need to go back to a few times! Keep moving forward. Find a practitioner that will help you work on your money stuff and purpose together so everything comes into alignment. I am a big believer in moving forward while you are healing so be sure to test some of the money stuff you have worked on in between sessions, or set a goal for creating a workshop where you earn a particular amount and remove blocks around that. Keep it flowing.

Be Generous

Its not the money itself that is the problem; its the clinging to it, afraid it will run out or disappear at anytime. Practicing generosity is a great way to create the energy of abundance for yourself and your clients. Give away a session every now and again, offer specials to faithful clients, have goody bags at your retreats or give them samples of your products. Offer a free talk or information session. List 10 things you could do to enhance the generosity of spirit around your practice. I believe generosity should be a natural part of your business, so ask yourself when was the last time you went above and beyond . It doesn’t have to be material either. A few kind words of encouragement or kindness can mean the world to someone who is doing their best or feeling a little overwhelmed. Be generous of heart and thankful for the support of your clients and people will be glad to return to you.

Remember

You are here to heal and prosper, so whatever choice you make be sure that it is contributing to your growth. Get excited about the energy and spirit of your business, and make mature financial decisions that will sustain and support you long term. It is totally okay to charge for a spiritual service. It doesn’t cheapen it or you. You can make a living and a life from it and be glad to do so. Be sure it is filled with love, kindness, passion and devotion, and let that be the measure of your success.
